Our History
In 1978, a survey among some members of Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama, revealed an interest in establishing a Bible study in the Leeds/Moody area.
On September 9, 1979, this group of believers gathered together in the basement of a church member’s home for worship. They soon realized that if the ministry was to make an impact on the community it needed a more suitable place to gather. In February of 1980 they rented a double-wide trailer on Hwy 411 just north of Moody Crossroads and called that home for the next four years. During this time the group decided to call themselves “Community Presbyterian Church” and called their first pastor, Rev. Craig Childs, in 1983.
In February 1984, Community was formally organized as a particular congregation in the Presbyterian Church in America and began to worship in a new, permanent building on October 7, 1984.
In September 1986, Community hired a second full-time staff member, Burt Boykin, who began his work as youth director and associate pastor. He was called to be senior pastor in 1995 after Craig Childs took another call. Burt served as senior pastor until 2019 when he stepped aside to be involved in an evangelism ministry.
In March 2019, Community called and welcomed current pastor Robby Grames. Robby and his family are a tremendous blessing to both the congregation of CPC and the surrounding community. The future is bright for the church under Robby’s leadership and we look forward to many more years of God’s blessing and Gospel ministry.
